on the heel of Michael Phelps’ quest for 8 Gold Medals at 2008 Olympics, let’s look at whom Michael is after.
Mark Spitz is the guy, he won a total of 9 Olympics Gold Medals, but that’s not the end of the story. in 1972, he entered 7 Olympics swimming events (100m freestyle, 200m freestyle, 100m butterfly, 200m butterfly, 4*100m freestyle relay, 4*200m freestyle relay, 4*100m medley relay), won 7 Gold Medals, AND set new world record in each of the 7 events!
there is eerie similarity between these two. Spitz predicted brashly he would win 6 golds at 1968 Olympics, ended up with only 2 team golds, 4 years later, he accomplished his quest; at Sydney, Phelps openly challenged Spitz’s records, only saw Australians smashed his dream, by this moment, he is 5 for 5 with 5 new world records under his name, only 3 more to go!
that said, you can also easily spot the contrast. while Phelps is armed to teeth with high-tech swim suit, Spitz opted to swam with his mustache. and let’s not forget that there was no 50m freestyle back then.
