This morning, I chatted with a Brazilian history teacher in MNS. We talked about a lot, holiday, work, and the like. His words inspired me a lot. Now I will share our talks and my reflection with you. Hope you can get something.
About Work
Shirley:
What is work? ¬
Does that mean you come to the office, open the computer, sign in QQ, then check the mail and sit in front of the computer until getting off work?¬
¬What is work? ¬
Does that mean you have to pretend to work busily and hard everyday to gain boss’ favor?¬
¬What is work? ¬
Does that mean you have a lot of complain, but you have to bury it deep in your heart?¬
¬What is work? ¬
Does that mean you have to adapt to it no matter you like it or not
What is work? ¬
Does that mean your potential and value will be aroused by it?¬
¬Well, you the wise, please tell me the answer. ¬
History Teacher:
Well, it's hard to tell, I would say about my work but not every work
It’s a way to help people and improve society (I teach to poor people), giving them instruments do make themselves better and change the world to make it a better place, but I know that working means to be exploited, not to do whatever you want to and whenever you want to, but it's something that my father has done to take me here, and before him my grandfather, and I can't let them down...
I mean, it's not fair that they have been through thins and now I try to runaway, it's just something that has to be done, so you can have money to live. There isn't much option, is there?
Well, even so, it was to be done, or else how can you get the money to live?
I mean, everyone in the world does it, why do you think you’re special and shouldn't have to do it?
My predecessors had to work. They were exploited and with the money that they got made me exist, gave me food, gave me clothing and a house... I don't intend to have children, but I owe to them to be part of it, they did their part, now i'm gonna do mine.
When I think myself not to fulfilling my obligations I feel ashamed in front of my ancestors, because they did it, if they didn't I wouldn't be here at first place.
My reflection:
I gain a lot of\great illumination in his words, especially the two underlined sentences. Exactly, working means to be exploited, not to do whatever you want to and whenever you want to. We put in a lot in our work such as time, labor, thoughts, etc., but have we got the equal thing in return? Most of time, not. We have to get to company office for work, where there is a fixed place or position, or workload for you. Moreover, we have to work from morning to night. There is a defined time of getting off work. We have to work or stay in the office even if we have nothing to do. That is work.
However, work is a part of our life. It does not only mean money, killing time but also joy, fulfillment, and other things which is more valued than money for it is capable of giving satisfaction, making you respected , making your life more meaningful or making the holidays more precious. And also we have to work to live up to our parent’s’ expectations. They worked hard to provide us better life, better education and any other things. It is them and their work made us existing in the world. So we have to work hard to repay them and do a good preparation for the next generation.
Everyone in the world does it, why do you think you’re special and shouldn't have to do it?
