On Learning English – Preface

记得《围城》里方鸿渐给唐小姐写信的时候，恨不得用英语写，因为用英语可以更肆无忌惮地用一些肉麻一些的词语，比如“亲爱的”、“甜心”等，这点我也深有感触。
　　
　　其实用英语写作，不但可以肉麻一些，还可以冠冕堂皇地自大一些，因为这是英国人和美国人的天性嘛。所以我喜欢用英语写，就在这一点上，呵呵。
　　
　　既然如此，我就不客气地把自己学英语的体会“自大”地介绍给大家，希望对大家有用。
　　
　　The most important thing to learn a language is to find the environment that forces you to not only listen to it and to speak it, but also to form your thoughts in it. For most of the non-native speakers, to find this environment becomes the most daunting challenge.
　　
　　I will say that, without feeling blushed, I am among the best non-native English speakers. I say this with such confidence, not just because it is true, but also because confidence is what everybody who wishes to learn a language well really needs.
　　
　　Now repeat after me, I read English well, I listen to English well, and I speak English well. Say it and believe it, and now we are ready to get serious.
　　
　　Too often we hear people say that their grammar is not yet good enough. That’s nothing but an excuse for them to hide behind their own shadow. Trust me when I say nobody including most American and British pay that much attention to grammar but nothing stop them from have happy and productive lives.
　　
　　So that’s the first myth you should throw into the trashcan. Even all you know is to pile some words together many people will still be able to understand you. Isn’t that what language supposed to do, to communicate? Don’t get me wrong, grammar is important, but for native speakers, they don’t resort to grammar books before they open their mouths, instead, when you have enough experiences, you will be able to tell whether your grammar is correct just by reading or speaking it.
